A Busy Summer of Flight Tests
Added 7 December 2009
I've been on the road throughout the UK during the summer photographing helicopter flight tests for Today's Pilot magazine. We've done an historic Hughes 269A in Cornwall, together with an Agusta 109A, Bölkow 105 and Enstrom 280FX. The Bölkow, affectionately known as "Billy" by her owners, Cardiff's Veritair, was a firm favourite despite turbulent air and his rigid rotor system conspiring to make us feel very, very air sick...
Climate Science Reported
Added 18 November 2009
Only a single image, and a small one at that, but nice to be included in the newly published United Nations Environment Programme Climate Change Science Compendium 2009. The picture on page 20 shows the Icebreaker Akademik Fedorov moored to the ice shelf at the Russian Novolazarevskaya station, East Antarctica.

An eight page feature in the March / April 2009 issue of The Sea magazine, Breaking Ice, tells the story of two voyages to the polar regions.

World Helicopter Championships 2008
Added 4 January 2009
The cover of the winter edition of Helicopter Life Magazine features one of last summer's pictures from Eisenach. A series of pictures feature inside. LOOP, Today's Pilot and Rotor Torque also ran photographs from the event.

Another Russian ship - this time I've traded in the normal icebreaker for something a little more classic. The Sedov was constructed in Germany, making her maiden voyage in 1921 as the Magdelene Vinnen II. In 1945 ownership passed to the Soviet Union as war reparation. She was then renamed Sedov after the polar explorer Georgy Sedov (there had to be a polar link somewhere!), and is now operated by the Murmansk Technical University. The Sedov is the world's largest tall ship, often seen in company with the Mir from the Admiral Makarov State Maritime Academy in St Petersburg (pictured).
The Helicopter Pilot's Companion
Added 22 November 2008
Many thanks to Helen Krasner for using a selection of pictures in her newly released book, The Helicopter Pilot's Companion. The volume is an ideal introduction to helicopter flying and is presented in an extremely readable and accessible way. It draws on Helen's past articles in Today's Pilot magazine and her flying experience as an instructor. She currently works with Staffordshire Helicopters at Tatenhill flying the R22 and R44.
The book is available from Crowood Press priced at £12.99
World Helicopter Championships 2008
Added 1 June 2008
I'll be at the World Helicopter Championships in Eisenach, Germany, between 13-18 August. The event is held every three years and is an opportunity to see some of the world's most skilled helicopter pilots competing in what is best described as the "Helicopter Olympics".
